World Fertility Day: 5 Things Everyone Should Know

Fertility is an important part of our overall health, yet many myths and misconceptions still surround it. World Fertility Day is an opportunity to open up a conversation about a topic that affects far more people than we might think. So, what should we all know about fertility?

1. Infertility Is More Common Than You Think

Difficulties conceiving are not uncommon. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately one in six people worldwide experience infertility at some point in their lives. Infertility can affect both women and men, and its causes can vary. The important thing to remember is that you are not alone, and there are options available to help address fertility challenges.

2. AMH Levels Are Not a Definitive Indicator of Fertility

When discussing female fertility, one of the first tests commonly performed is the measurement of AMH levels. Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is an important marker that helps estimate ovarian reserve, meaning the approximate number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. It also provides doctors with valuable information about how the ovaries may respond to hormonal stimulation during fertility treatment.

However, AMH is not the only measure of fertility, and its level does not provide a complete picture of your chances of becoming pregnant.

A low AMH level is therefore not automatically a reason to panic. It does not directly indicate egg quality, nor does it determine on its own whether you can conceive naturally. AMH results should always be evaluated alongside other factors, particularly age and overall reproductive health.

3. A Normal Semen Analysis May Not Reveal Everything

A semen analysis is one of the basic tests used to assess male fertility. It primarily evaluates sperm count, motility, and morphology (shape).

Even when the results are within the normal range, a couple may still experience difficulties conceiving. In such cases, the cause may be related to other factors that a standard semen analysis cannot detect.

One such factor may be sperm DNA integrity. Depending on the individual circumstances, a doctor may recommend additional testing, such as a sperm DNA fragmentation test, to gain a more detailed understanding of male fertility.

4. You Don't Have to Wait to Ask Questions About Fertility

Many people only begin to think about their reproductive health after experiencing difficulties conceiving for an extended period. However, consulting a fertility specialist can also be beneficial earlier, particularly if you have irregular menstrual cycles, a history of certain medical conditions, or other concerns about your fertility.

An early consultation can help identify potential complications and provide a better understanding of the available options.

5. Regular Menstrual Cycles Do Not Always Guarantee Fertility

Having regular menstrual cycles is generally a positive sign and often indicates that ovulation is occurring. However, even a regular cycle does not automatically mean that everything is functioning optimally from a fertility perspective.

Successful conception depends on a wide range of factors, not just ovulation. These may include the patency of the fallopian tubes, egg quality, the condition of the uterine lining, and the quality of the partner's sperm.

Therefore, if you are having difficulty conceiving despite having regular menstrual cycles, it is important to take a comprehensive approach to evaluating your reproductive health.

Let's Talk Openly About Fertility

Infertility remains a sensitive topic for many people, and discussing it openly can be difficult. However, open communication, reliable information, and mutual understanding can help break down misconceptions and reduce unnecessary fears.

World Fertility Day reminds us that reproductive health should not be a taboo subject. The more we know about it, the better we can understand our bodies and the options available to us.
